Former Leader of the Conservative Party and member of Mrs Thatcher and John Major’s cabinets Lord Howard, CH, QC formally opened the South Derbyshire Conservatives new offices and campaign centre on Saturday 17th January. The offices have been in operation since early December 2014.
Lord Howard arrived in South Derbyshire to support local MP, Heather Wheeler, in her forthcoming General Election campaign attending a fund raising event at Bretby Hall on Friday evening.
Lord Howard reminded party workers and local councillors that “the forthcoming election is the most vital in a generation” adding: “Everyone understands the election of a Labour Government will be a disaster for South Derbyshire’s economy: today unemployment in this constituency is less than 1% whilst the cost of living is beginning to fall and tax cuts, if the conservatives are re- elected, are now possible. Everyone also knows that every, and I mean every, Labour government overspends, increases debts and leaves office with the economy in free fall. Here in South Derbyshire we have to make sure this does not happen again.”
Referring to UKIP, Lord Howard made this appeal to those considering voting for them stating: “Voters need to be clear on three things. If you want a referendum on Europe then you must vote Conservative … for if Heather Wheeler is not re-elected and David Cameron is not Prime Minister there will be no referendum. If you want to see immigration controlled without damaging the economy, then you should vote Conservative. If you want pension’s protecting, the NHS funded and economic stability then you must vote Conservative.”
Lord Howard concluded “Heather Wheeler is a fantastic MP and has worked tirelessly to bring and secure jobs in South Derbyshire: she lives to work for the area which has been her home for over 25 years - no wonder that in London they call her ‘’Mrs South Derbyshire’’ and I know it is a title of which she is justly proud.”
